This Memorial Day marks the 150th anniversary of one of the nation’s most solemn and respectful observances. Many of us will spend the day surrounded by loved ones at the beach, during a barbecue, or while having a picnic.
We encourage everyone to take some time — alone or with loved ones — to mark the day, and to think about the high price so many paid in service to our country. Here are three suggestions:
1. Attend the nearest Memorial Day parade
Show your appreciation and support by attending a Memorial Day parade, where veterans marching in the parade help personify our remembrances. This site features a list of scheduled parades.
2. Pay your respects at a local veterans cemetery
National veterans cemeteries work with local communities across the country to observe Memorial Day. Click here for a list of the cemeteries and their contact information. Local cemeteries may also be able to connect you with organizations volunteering time to place flags by the markers of veterans.
3. Take a moment to think of the fallen
Anyone anywhere can take part in the National Moment of Remembrance. At 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, pause for one minute and reflect upon the sacrifices made by the men and women who gave their lives for our continued liberty.
Once Memorial Day 2018 has passed, we should each do our best to bring these sacrifices to mind often and give thanks for the freedom we enjoy today.
